Summer Program Description

6/30-7/3 (Week 1)
Morning Crimebuster: There's been a crime at SET School! It's up to you, Detective, to investigate the crime scene, collect clues, analyze the evidence and catch the criminal. How do police use forensic techniques to solve crimes? You'll learn chemical tests, how to lift and read fingerprints, what to do with microscopic evidence, and how to hone your powers of observation when conducting a Crime Scene Investigation. Lego Robotics: Use Lego Technic and the MINDSTORMS programming system to build and program your own robotic inventions! Using motors, sensors and imagination, we'll work on projects like art-bots, maze-runners, creature-bots, robo-soccer, and others!
Afternoon Suburban Safari: Learn about the animals that live in our own backyard! Make your own nature journal and improve your power of observation as we investigate tracks and other signs of animals. We'll set traps for bugs and other creepy crawlies as we explore the forest habitat behind the school.

7/7 - 7/11 (Week 2)
Morning Animation: An egg-shaped blob of clay transforms into a fire-breathing dragon! Learn how to create the illusion of motion with everyday materials like LEGOs, toys, clay, and paper cutouts. Bring your creative ideas to life with stop-motion animation software and your imagination. Lego Robotics: Use Lego Technic and the MINDSTORMS programming system to build and program your own robotic inventions! Using motors, sensors and imagination, we'll work on projects like art-bots, maze-runners, creature-bots, robo-soccer, and others!
Afternoon Vet School: Do you love animals? As a vet in training you'll learn about how to care for pets, diagnose illness and how to treat injured animals in an emergency. Look at X-rays of different kinds of pets and study animal physiology. We will have a variety of real pets to interact with every day.

7/14 - 7/18 (Week 3)
Morning Volcanology: August 24th, 79 A.D.: Mount Vesuvius explodes and quickly buries Pompeii and Herculaneum in deep ash. Learn how shifting plates of the Earth's crust can cause explosive eruptions, massive earthquakes, and giant tsunamis. Build your own volcano model and invent your own lava recipe. We'll load up the magma chamber and ERUPT our volcanoes! Watch out, unsuspecting city! You shouldn't have built so close to a volcano! Lego Robotics: Use Lego Technic and the MINDSTORMS programming system to build and program your own robotic inventions! Using motors, sensors and imagination, we'll work on projects like art-bots, maze-runners, sumo-bots, robo-soccer, and others!
Afternoon Molecule Master: Be the master of the chemical universe! Mix chemicals to make new compounds. Test acids and bases with a color-changing potion. Cross-link sulfur atoms with boron atoms to make gooey slimes.

7/21 - 7/25 (Week 4)
Morning Space Missions: July 20, 1969. Neil Armstrong is the first human to step onto the Moon! What were the Apollo missions like? What about going to other planets like Mars of the moons of Jupiter? Learn about our moon and the wonders of the solar system with hands-on activities. Lego Robotics: Use Lego Technic and the MINDSTORMS programming system to build and program your own robotic inventions! Using motors, sensors and imagination, we'll work on projects like art-bots, maze-runners, creature-bots, robo-soccer, and others!
Afternoon Going Ballistic: Let's shoot off some projectiles! You'll build different contraptions like a catapult, an air powered missile launcher, and a baking soda rocket. You'll also learn about trajectories and how to aim that water balloon to hit your target!

7/28-8/1 (Week 5)
Morning Gross Anatomy: What makes living things tick? You'll explore vertebrate physiology from the cellular level to the organ systems, how they work and what they look like. You'll also learn about the yucky stuff like parasites and mucus. This class includes microscope work and dissection. Lego Robotics: Use Lego Technic and the MINDSTORMS programming system to build and program your own robotic inventions! Using motors, sensors and imagination, we'll work on projects like art-bots, maze-runners, creature-bots, robo-soccer, and others!
Afternoon Dungeons and Dragons:You are searching old ruins by the light of a flickering torch. Suddenly a giant troll steps out of the shadows, and he looks mad! What will you do? Run, fight, cast a spell? The choice is yours as you and your friends play heroes in a fantasy world using the Dungeons and Dragons rules.

8/12 - 8/16 (Week 6)
Morning Geometry Jamboree: For the ancient Egyptians and Greeks to Renaissance artists, geometry was key. Learn about "Marth", the "Art" in Math using kid-friendly, hands-on Montessori materials. Lego Robotics: Use Lego Technic and the MINDSTORMS programming system to build and program your own robotic inventions! Using motors, sensors and imagination, we'll work on projects like art-bots, maze-runners, creature-bots, robo-soccer, and others!
Afternoon Beyblade Physics: A remarkable amount of science underlies the humble top. Torque, momentum, weight, mass… What makes for the best spin, and what is the best design when you’re making them slam into each other until only the victor's still upright?

7/28-8/1 (Week 5)

8/4 - 8/8 (Week 6)
Morning Flight: How does an airplane stay up? How does a helicopter work? How do birds, bats, and butterflies fly? Learn about the science of aeronautics while making all sorts of different flying toys. Lego Robotics: Use Lego Technic and the MINDSTORMS programming system to build and program your own robotic inventions! Using motors, sensors and imagination, we'll work on projects like art-bots, maze-runners, creature-bots, robo-soccer, and others!
