Summer Program Description

6/25/2018 - 6/29/2018 (Week 1 - GRADES 4-7)
Morning Alchemists Guild: What was chemistry like in the Middles Ages? Alchemists studied herbs, metals and magic to uncover the mysteries of life. Despite some wacky ideas, they laid the groundwork for real chemistry and medicine, as we'll see when we try our hand at medieval chemistry. LEGO Robotics: Build and program a robot using LEGO MINDSTORMS! Each week, we'll learn the basics of programming then pick a project to work on. Some sample project ideas are: Sumo-Bot, Racers, Maze-runner, Hamster-bot etc.
Afternoon Wind-powered Bot: Artist-engineer Theo Jansen built an intricate wind-powered contraption called the Strandbeest that used only the wind to make it move in rhythmic strides. We'll build a scale model, then harness the power of the wind to set it running. (This class has an extra $15 materials fee.)

7/2 - 7/6(week 2, GRADES 4-7) Note: this is a 4 day week due to July 4th holiday
Morning Explode It: We blow the lid off this week! You'll make things that pop, fizz, bang and explode! We'll safely investigate some fascinating chemical reactions that end with a bang. Here's your chance to yell, “Fire in the hole!” Animation: A circle drawn on a whiteboard transforms into a fire-breathing dragon! Learn how to create the illusion of motion. Bring your creative ideas to life using a variety of materials like LEGOs, toys, clay, paper cutouts, stop-motion animation software and your imagination.
Afternoon Science of Star Wars:Get ready to jump to light speed! Droids, aliens, death stars and galactic empires await you! How much is science and how much is science fiction? Join us for a week of Star Wars! (This class has an extra $10 materials fee.)

7/9/2018 - 7/13/2018 (Week 3 - GRADES 4-7)
Morning Med School: Be a student doctor! How do doctors know what to do when someone is sick? What causes disease? What do broken bones look like in X-rays? Dissect a fetal pig to see how organ systems interact in the body. Learn about the human body and how it functions, and find out why doctors scramble when they hear the words “Code blue!” LEGO Robotics: Improve your LEGO MINDSTORMS construction and programming skills by creating your own inventions! Using motors, sensors and imagination, we'll work on projects like art-bots, maze-runners, creature-bots, robo-soccer, and others!
Afternoon Vet School: Do you love animals? As a Vet school student you'll learn about how to care for pets and how to treat injured animals in an emergency. Look at X-rays of different kinds of pets and study animal physiology. We'll also have guest visit from a real Tufts Vet School student.

7/16/2018 - 7/20/2018 (Week 4 - GRADES 4-7)
Morning Modular Solarbot: Harness the sun's energy to animate a robot model that can be reassembled into different configurations. Try them all out! (This class has an extra $15 materials fee.) Web Design: Learn to code in HTML and create your own website. Make it fun and interactive by adding menus, images, video files, animation and sound, then publish it so you can share with your friends!
Afternoon Secret Agent Academy: It's spy vs. spy as we dive into the shadowy world of espionage and secret plots. Learn cryptography to make secret codes. Use disguises to fool the enemy and pick locks to escape if captured. Construct your own spy gadgets, disarm laser security systems, and save the world.

7/23/2018 - 7/27/2018 (Week 5 - GRADES 4-7)
Morning Rockets: Blast off! The sky's the limit as you investigate Newton's Three Laws of Motion, then build and test different kinds of rockets. We'll also learn about the Apollo program, the International Space Station and the Mars rover, and speculate about future space exploration. LEGO Robotics: Improve your LEGO MINDSTORMS construction and programming skills by creating your own inventions! Using motors, sensors and imagination, we'll work on projects like art-bots, maze-runners, creature-bots, robo-soccer, and others!
Afternoon Dungeoneers' Guild: You are searching old ruins by the light of a flickering torch. Suddenly a giant troll steps out of the shadows, and he looks mad! What will you do? Run, fight, cast a spell? The choice is yours as you and your friends play heroes in a fantasy world using the Dungeons and Dragons rules. Search dark dungeons, solve insidious riddles, fight monstrous evil and finally escape with the fabulous treasure. Make sure to bring your imagination!

7/30/2018 - 8/3/2018 (Week 6 - GRADES 4-7)
Morning Solar Cooking: Let's harness the power of that giant ball of fire in the sky! Design and build solar cookers and make some yummy snacks! Animation: A circle drawn on a whiteboard transforms into a fire-breathing dragon! Learn how to create the illusion of motion. Bring your creative ideas to life using a variety of materials like LEGOs, toys, clay, paper cutouts, stop-motion animation software and your imagination.
Afternoon It's About Time: How did ancient people tell time? What were the first clocks like? Is time travel possible? Why do sailors need good clocks? We'll learn about time and timepieces as we build our own clocks.

8/6/2018 - 8/10/2018 (Week 7 - GRADES 4-7)
Morning Makerlab: Think like an engineer! We'll build a hydraulic arm and other cool inventions. Learn how simple machines make work easier, and have loads of fun building stuff. (This class has an extra $20 materials fee.) App Inventor: Imagine, create, enjoy! Learn to program your own apps for Android phones using MIT's App Inventor. What will you create?
Afternoon Web Design: Learn to code in HTML and create your own website. Make it fun and interactive by adding menus, images, video files, animation and sound, then publish it so you can share with your friends!

8/13/2018 - 8/17/2018 (Week 8 - GRADES 4-7)
Morning Magic of Numbers: What is symmetry, and why does it appear throughout the natural world? We'll investigate the mathematical patterns that emerge in nature, and use them to create some beautiful art as well. Scratch Programming: Create your own games and animations while applying logic and mathematical concepts such as Cartesian coordinate system, variables, and broadcasting. Publish your creation on the Internet and share them with your friends!
Afternoon Pokemania: Love Pokemon? We'll delve into the strange origins of the many Pokemon species. Find out why a flamethrower skunk like Stunky is closer to becoming reaity than you'd expect.
