Summer Program Description

6/26/2017 - 6/30/2017 (Week 1 - GRADES 4-7)
Morning Developmental Biology: We all started out as a single cell. How did we grow into big, complex animals with organs, skeletons and muscles? We’ll learn about how all things grow and change. Animation: A little clay man jumps out of a cup, puts paperclips on his feet and starts skating across the table! Learn how to create the illusion of motion. Bring your creative ideas to life using a variety of materials like LEGOs, toys, clay, paper cutouts, stop-motion animation software and your imagination.
Afternoon Ancient Arts: Ancient people worked hard, but they always found time for art and music. We'll blend science, art and history as we learn how to make our own paper and paint, make and bake sculptures, draw with prehistoric tools, make simple musical instruments and other fun projects.

7/5 - 7/7(week 2, GRADES 4-7) Note: this is a 3 day week due to July 4th holiday
Morning Medical Mysteries: Doctors do amazing things to keep us healthy. But sometimes even the best doctors scratch their heads when they get a tough case. We’ll look at some of these mysteries and see if we can solve them. LEGO Robotics: Improve your LEGO MINDSTORMS construction and programming skills by creating your own inventions! Using motors, sensors and imagination, we'll work on projects like art-bots, maze-runners, creature-bots, robo-soccer, and others!
Afternoon Dungeoneers' Guild: Searching ancient ruins by the light of a flickering torch, you come to a strange sealed door. You can hear mysterious sounds approaching. What will you do? You and your friends play heroes in a fantasy world set in the Middle Ages using the Dungeons and Dragons rules. Search dark dungeons, solve insidious puzzles, encounter strange monsters, and maybe even escape with fabulous treasure. Make sure to bring your imagination!

7/10/2017 - 7/14/2017 (Week 3 - GRADES 4-7)
Morning Physics of Structures: Want to design your dream city? How do people build huge skyscrapers, bridges and theme park rides? Explore different materials, learn about forces, loads, and pressure, then experiment with design principles as you build awesome structures. We'll also investigate some ancient structures like aqueducts and castles. Get your blueprints ready! Animation: A circle drawn on a whiteboard transforms into a fire-breathing dragon! Learn how to create the illusion of motion. Bring your creative ideas to life using a variety of materials like LEGOs, toys, clay, paper cutouts, stop-motion animation software and your imagination.
Afternoon Vet School: Do you love animals? As a vet school student you'll learn about how to care for pets and how to treat injured animals in an emergency. Look at X-rays of different kinds of pets and study animal physiology. Each day we'll bring in different live animals, from lizards to cats!

7/17/2017 - 7/21/2017 (Week 4 - GRADES 4-7)
Morning Egg Launch: This is THE classic engineering challenge, are you ready? Design, build and test devices to protect an egg that is launched into the air and must land without a crack. We'll use a variety of different materials to build our launchers and protective egg capsules as we search for the best way to safely return our EGGstronaut to earth. LEGO Robotics: Improve your LEGO MINDSTORMS construction and programming skills by creating your own inventions! Using motors, sensors and imagination, we'll work on projects like art-bots, maze-runners, creature-bots, robo-soccer, and others!
Afternoon Pokemania: Are you a Poke-maniac? We'll delve into the strange origins of the many Pokemon species, such as the real-world shrimp capable of shattering its way out of a glass tank or the massive serpents that would put a Gyarados to shame. Work out the ecology and physics of the Pokemon world, then try your hand at hacking the code of the original games!

7/24/2017 - 7/28/2017 (Week 5 - GRADES 4-7)
Morning Rubik’s Cube: In 1974 Erno Rubrik invented a puzzle toy in the shape of a rotatable cube. Since then, Rubik's cube has become a worldwide phenomenon, You'll learn the secrets of the cube and solve it yourself! Test your speed cubing skills! You can do the Cube! Web Design: Learn to code in HTML and create your own website. Make it fun and interactive by adding menus, images, video files, animation and sound, then publish it so you can share with your friends!

7/31/2017 - 8/4/2017 (Week 6 - GRADES 4-7)
Morning Crimebusters: Use science to solve crimes just like police forensic detectives! What chemical test will identify a mysterious powder? How can the length of a person's foot be used as evidence? Examine clues, unravel mysteries and identify the criminal. Case closed! LEGO Robotics: Improve your LEGO MINDSTORMS construction and programming skills by creating your own inventions! Using motors, sensors and imagination, we'll work on projects like art-bots, maze-runners, creature-bots, robo-soccer, and others!
Afternoon Maker Lab: Learn how to make stuff like wearable art, scribble-bots, magnet merry-go-rounds and other fun creations. Imagine it, build it! Become a DIY master! There is an additional $20 materials fee.

8/7/2017 - 8/11/2017 (Week 7 - GRADES 4-7)
Morning Field Biology: Biologist like to study living things in their own environments. We’ll check out the woods and fields behind the school, and learn how animals, plants, climate and the terrain combine to make an ecosystem work. Scratch Programming: Use a fun programming language created by MIT to build your own games and animations. You'll be learning about logic and the Cartesian coordinate system as you build your game. Publish your creation on the Internet and share them with your friends!
Afternoon Fantastic Beasts: Enter the world of Harry Potter and join us for the popular Hogwart’s class "Care of Magical Creatures". We’ll also get sorted into Houses, make our wands, and play some Quidditch!

8/14/2017 - 8/18/2017 (Week 8 - GRADES 4-7)
Morning Molecule Masters: Mix chemicals to make new compounds. Test acids and bases with a color-changing potion. Learn how to cross-link sulfur atoms with boron atoms to make gooey slimes. Investigate the power of polymers. Be the master of the chemical universe! LEGO Robotics: Improve your LEGO MINDSTORMS construction and programming skills by creating your own inventions! Using motors, sensors and imagination, we'll work on projects like art-bots, maze-runners, creature-bots, robo-soccer, and others!
Afternoon Physics of Star Wars: Get ready to jump to lightspeed! Droids, aliens, death stars and galactic empires await you! How much is science and how much is science fiction? Is the Force strong in you? Join us for a week of Star Wars! (This class has an extra $10 materials fee.)
