Summer Program Description

6/27/2016 - 7/1/2016 (Week 1 - GRADES 4-7)
Morning Med School: Be a student doctor! How do doctors know what to do when someone is sick? What causes disease? What do broken bones look like in X-rays? Dissect a fetal pig to see how organ systems interact in the body. Learn about the human body and how it functions, and find out why doctors scramble when they hear the words “Code blue!” Scratch Programming: Use a fun progamming language created by MIT to build your own games and animations. You'll be learning about logic and the Cartesian coordinate system as you build your game. Publish your creation on the Internet and share them with your friends!
Afternoon Build a Bot: From modern kits of plastic powered by green energy to wood robots programmed with string invented back in ancient Greece, we'll build bots together that you can take home. (This class has an extra $30 materials fee.)

7/5/2016 - 7/8/2016 (July 4th week, GRADES 4-7)
Morning Weird Botany: There are some peculiar plants out there, like vampire vines and strangler figs! Some plants use chemical warfare against their neighbors while others light the whole place on fire. We'll unravel their secrets, and plant some weird ones to take home with you! LEGO Robotics: Improve your LEGO MINDSTORMS construction and programming skills by creating your own inventions! Using sensors and motors, we'll work on projects like Slam-dunk-bot, Art-bot, Fussball arcade game, and others!
Afternoon Marine Biology: Calling all aquanauts! From coral reefs to shoreline tidepools, deep ocean thermal vents and vast open water, the ocean is vast and full of strange life. Let's explore its wonders and mysteries, and get a close up look at some live sealife!

7/11/2016 - 7/15/2016 (Week 3 - GRADES 4-7)
Morning Rockets: Blast off! The sky's the limit as you investigate Newton's Three Laws of Motion, then build and test different kinds of rockets. We'll also learn about the Apollo program, the International Space Station and the Mars project, and speculate about future space exploration. Animation: A little clay man jumps out of a cup, puts paperclips on his feet and starts skating across the table! Learn how to create the illusion of motion. Bring your creative ideas to life using your imagination, a variety of materials like LEGOs, toys, clay, and paper cutouts, and stop-motion animation software.
Afternoon Dungeoneers' Guild: You are searching castle ruins for a lost artifact by the light of a flickering torch. Suddenly a giant troll steps out of the shadows, and he looks mad! What will you do? Run, fight, cast a spell? The choice is yours as you and your friends play heroes in a fantasy world set in the Middle Ages using the Dungeons and Dragons rules. Search dark dungeons, solve insidious riddles, fight monstrous evil and finally escape with the fabulous treasure. Make sure to bring your imagination!

7/18/2016 - 7/22/2016 (Week 4 - GRADES 4-7)
Morning Going Green: With only wind and water our ancestors powered mills and factories! Let's take a new look at these and other alternative energy sources to replace fossil fuels. Let's build some devices that harness solar, wind and water energy, like a cell phone charger and a solar oven. What about other forms of energy, like bioenergy, flywheels and fuel cells? Get energized this week! LEGO Robotics: Improve your LEGO MINDSTORMS construction and programming skills by creating your own inventions! Using motors, sensors and imagination, we'll work on projects like Relay racers, Bumper cars, Robo-Baseball, and others!
Afternoon Monsters of Myths & Magic: From the evil whales of Iceland and shapeshifting foxes of Asia to the airplane gremlins and Bigfoot, every culture across the globe loves stories of wierd monsters. Learn about the history and true indentity behind the beasts of myth like the Loch Ness monster, and then make up your own tales as well!

7/25/2016 - 7/29/2016 (Week 5 - GRADES 4-7)
Morning Molecule Masters: Mix chemicals to make new compounds. Test acids and bases with a color-changing potion. Learn how to cross-link sulfur atoms with boron atoms to make gooey slimes. Investigate the power of polymers. Be the master of the chemical universe!
Afternoon Vet School: Do you love animals? As a Vet school student you'll learn about how to care for pets and how to treat injured animals in an emergency.
