Summer Program Description

6/25 - 6/29 (Week 1, GRADES 1-3)
Morning Volcanology: We'll find out how the shifting plates of Earth's crust can cause explosive volcanic eruptions, massive earthquakes, and giant tsunamis. You'll build and decorate your own volcano model and invent your own super lava recipe. We'll load up the magma chamber and ERUPT our volcanoes! Watch out, unsuspecting city! You shouldn't have built so close to a volcano! Scratch Programming: Create your own games and animations while applying logic and mathematical concepts such as Cartesian coordinate system, variables, and broadcasting. Publish your creation on the Internet and share them with your friends!
Afternoon Build It: How do buildings stay up? What are the different kinds of bridges? How do you build something on the moon? Let's build stuff and see!

7/2 - 7/6(week 2, GRADES 1-3) Note: this is a 4 day week due to July 4th holiday
Morning Animal Architects: From beavers to birds to bees, there are some animals who amaze us with their ability to build! We'll learn about nature's architects and make some structures ourselves. LEGO Robotics: Improve your LEGO MINDSTORMS construction and programming skills by creating your own inventions! Using motors, sensors and imagination, we'll work on projects like art-bots, maze-runners, creature-bots, robo-soccer, and others!
Afternoon Science of Star Wars:Get ready to jump to light speed! Droids, aliens, death stars and galactic empires await you! How much is science and how much is science fiction? Join us for a week of Star Wars! (This class has an extra $10 materials fee.)

7/9 - 7/13 (Week 3, GRADES 1-3)
Morning Beyond the Five Senses: We all learn about sight, taste, smell, hearing and touch. But did you know there are at least nine more senses? We'll explore how they work and test them with fun activities. Web Design: Learn to code in HTML and create your own website. Make it fun and interactive by adding menus, images, video files, animation and sound, then publish it so you can share with your friends!
Afternoon Vet School: Do you love animals? As a Vet school student you'll learn about how to care for pets and how to treat injured animals in an emergency. Look at X-rays of different kinds of pets and study animal physiology. We'll also have guest visit from a real Tufts Vet School student.

7/16 - 7/20 (Week 4, GRADES 1-3)
Morning Boats: Humans have used boats for 10,000 years! We have relied on boats of all kinds, from little fishing rafts on ponds to mighty ships that travel the world's oceans. How do boats work? We'll explore buoyancy, design and materials as we build our own boats. LEGO Robotics: Improve your LEGO MINDSTORMS construction and programming skills by creating your own inventions! Using motors, sensors and imagination, we'll work on projects like art-bots, maze-runners, creature-bots, robo-soccer, and others!
Afternoon Hero Quest: You are searching old ruins by the light of a flickering torch. Suddenly a giant troll steps out of the shadows, and he looks mad! What will you do? Run, fight, cast a spell? The choice is yours as you and your friends play heroes in a fantasy world using the Dungeons and Dragons rules. Search dark dungeons, solve insidious riddles, fight monstrous evil and finally escape with the fabulous treasure. Make sure to bring your imagination!

7/23 - 7/27 (Week 5, GRADES 1-3)
Morning Rocks and Fossils: How do geologists know that T. rex didn't live at the same time as Stegasaurus? What is the difference between sedimentary and metamorphic rock? Learn about rocks, fossils and the timeline of Earth's history! Animation: A circle drawn on a whiteboard transforms into a fire-breathing dragon! Learn how to create the illusion of motion. Bring your creative ideas to life using a variety of materials like LEGOs, toys, clay, paper cutouts, stop-motion animation software and your imagination.
Afternoon Geometry Jamboree: For the ancient Egyptians and Greeks to Renaissance artists, geometry was key. Learn about "Marth", the "Art" in Math using kid-friendly, hands-on Montessori materials.

7/30 - 8/3 (Week 6, GRADES 1-3)
Morning Flight: How does an airplane stay up? How does a helicopter work? How do birds, bats, and butterflies fly? Learn about the science of aeronautics while making all sorts of different flying toys. LEGO Robotics: Improve your LEGO MINDSTORMS construction and programming skills by creating your own inventions! Using motors, sensors and imagination, we'll work on projects like art-bots, maze-runners, creature-bots, robo-soccer, and others!
Afternoon Ancient Arts: Ancient people worked hard, but they always found time for art and music. We'll blend science, art and history as we make our own paper and paint, mold clay into bowls, draw with prehistoric tools, make simple musical instruments and other fun projects.

8/6 - 8/10 (Week 7 - GRADES 1-3)
Morning Kitchen Chemistry: You can do science with stuff found in your kitchen! Did you know cooking is chemistry? We'll investigate some chemical reactions, make interesting mixtures, and investigate the properties of matter found in our own homes! Web Design: Learn to code in HTML and create your own website. Make it fun and interactive by adding menus, images, video files, animation and sound, then publish it so you can share with your friends!
Afternoon Field Biology: Biologists like to study living things in their own environments. We'll check out the woods and fields behind the school, and learn how animals, plants, climate and the terrain combine to make an ecosystem work.

8/13 - 8/17 (Week 8 - GRADES 1-3)
Morning Rockets: Blast off! The sky's the limit as you investigate Newton's Three Laws of Motion, then build and test different kinds of rockets. We'll also learn about the Apollo program, the International Space Station and the Mars rover, and speculate about future space exploration. LEGO Robotics: Improve your LEGO MINDSTORMS construction and programming skills by creating your own inventions! Using motors, sensors and imagination, we'll work on projects like art-bots, maze-runners, creature-bots, robo-soccer, and others!
Afternoon Pokemania: Love Pokemon? We'll delve into the strange origins of the many Pokemon species. Find out why a flamethrower skunk like Stunky is closer to becoming reaity than you'd expect. Why does Parasect have such strange dead white eyes? Work out the ecology and physics of the Pokemon world, and play Pokemon!

8/20 - 8/24 (Week 9 - GRADES 1-3)
Morning Slime Time: Get ready to be slimed! Discover the chemistry of polymers behind all things gooey and gummy, then make your own oozes, slimes, mucus, and goo. We'll experiment with different formulas and you can even make edible slime to take home and gross out your friends! Animation: A circle drawn on a whiteboard transforms into a fire-breathing dragon! Learn how to create the illusion of motion. Bring your creative ideas to life using a variety of materials like LEGOs, toys, clay, paper cutouts, stop-motion animation software and your imagination.
Afternoon Ultimate Lego MOC: In Legospeak, MOC stands for My Own Creation. Let your imagination loose in this fun class. We'll check out some awesome MOCs created by Master Builders, then we'll build our own fabulous creations.
