Summer Program Description

6/26 - 6/30 (Week 1, GRADES 1-3)
Morning Life Through the Ages: How did we get from tiny bacteria to mighty dinosaurs to clever humans since the early days of Earth? We値l explore 4.5 billion years of life on Earth, and look at how evolutionary trends and global disasters shaped the life on our planet. Animation: A little clay man jumps out of a cup, puts paperclips on his feet and starts skating across the table! Learn how to create the illusion of motion. Bring your creative ideas to life using your imagination, a variety of materials like LEGOs, toys, clay, and paper cutouts, and stop-motion animation software.
Afternoon Ancient Arts: Ancient people worked hard, but they always found time for art and music. We'll blend science, art and history as we learn how to make our own paper and paint, make and bake sculptures, draw with prehistoric tools, make simple musical instruments and other fun projects.

7/5 - 7/7(week 2, GRADES 1-3) Note: this is a 3 day week due to July 4th holiday
Morning Natural Disasters: Volcanoes, earthquakes, tornadoes, tsunamis! Yikes! Learn about natural disasters, how they happen and what can you do to stay safe when disaster strikes. LEGO Robotics: Improve your LEGO MINDSTORMS construction and programming skills by creating your own inventions! Using motors, sensors and imagination, we'll work on projects like art-bots, maze-runners, creature-bots, robo-soccer, and others!
Afternoon Dungeoneers' Guild: Searching ancient ruins by the light of a flickering torch, you come to a strange sealed door. You can hear mysterious sounds approaching. What will you do? You and your friends play heroes in a fantasy world set in the Middle Ages using the Dungeons and Dragons rules. Search dark dungeons, solve insidious puzzles, encounter strange monsters, and maybe even escape with fabulous treasure. Make sure to bring your imagination!

7/10 - 7/14 (Week 3, GRADES 1-3)
Morning Going Ballistic: Let's shoot off some projectiles! You'll build a catapult, an air powered missile launcher, and a super-sized slingshot! Learn how to turn an ordinary straw into a high-flying dart. You'll also learn about trajectories and how to aim that water balloon to hit your target! Animation: A circle drawn on a whiteboard transforms into a fire-breathing dragon! Learn how to create the illusion of motion. Bring your creative ideas to life using a variety of materials like LEGOs, toys, clay, paper cutouts, stop-motion animation software and your imagination.
Afternoon Vet School: Do you love animals? As a vet school student you'll learn about how to care for pets and how to treat injured animals in an emergency. Look at X-rays of different kinds of pets and study animal physiology. Each day we'll bring in different live animals, from lizards to cats!

7/17 - 7/21 (Week 4, GRADES 1-3)
Morning Animal Architects:From beavers to birds to bees, there are some animals who amaze us with their ability to build! We値l learn about these architects and make some structures ourselves. LEGO Robotics: Improve your LEGO MINDSTORMS construction and programming skills by creating your own inventions! Using motors, sensors and imagination, we'll work on projects like art-bots, maze-runners, creature-bots, robo-soccer, and others!
Afternoon Pokemania: Are you a Poke-maniac? We'll delve into the strange origins of the many Pokemon species, such as the real-world shrimp capable of shattering its way out of a glass tank or the massive serpents that would put a Gyarados to shame. Work out the ecology and physics of the Pokemon world, then try your hand at hacking the code of the original games!

7/24 - 7/28 (Week 5, GRADES 1-3)
Morning Space Adventure: Do you dream of being an astronaut exploring space or a colonist living on Mars? Learn about stars, planets, comets and asteroids and how robot explorers are helping unlock the secrets of space. Journey to the Moon with the Apollo team, design a gigantic space station, and build a Martian city! Web Design: Learn to code in HTML and create your own website. Make it fun and interactive by adding menus, images, video files, animation and sound, then publish it so you can share with your friends!
Afternoon Dynamic Contraptions: Everything is in motion this week. You'll go beyond simple structures and learn to use Lego technic pieces, K'nex, and other building materials to design and build contraptions that fold up, pop open, spin, and shoot down a zip line. Use your imagination and come up with the craziest contraptions ever! This class has an additonal $10 materials fee

7/31 - 8/4 (Week 6, GRADES 1-3)
Morning Slime Time: Get ready to be slimed! Discover the chemistry of polymers behind all things gooey and gummy, then make your own oozes, slimes, mucus, and goo. We'll experiment with different formulas for slimes to take home and gross out your friends!
Scratch ProgrammingUse a fun programming language created by MIT to build your own games and animations. You'll be learning about logic and the Cartesian coordinate system as you build your game. Publish your creation on the Internet and share them with your friends!
Afternoon Fantastic Beasts: Enter the world of Harry Potter and join us for the popular Hogwart痴 class "Care of Magical Creatures". We値l also get sorted into Houses, make our wands, and play some Quidditch! This class has an additional $10 materials fee.

We'll investigate some chemical reactions and interesting mixtures, make a tower with Jello, get plastic from milk, turn tea into ink, and other great concoctions! LEGO Robotics: Improve your LEGO MINDSTORMS construction and programming skills by creating your own inventions! Using motors, sensors and imagination, we'll work on projects like art-bots, maze-runners, creature-bots, robo-soccer, and others!
Afternoon Physics of Star Wars: Get ready to jump to lightspeed! Droids, aliens, death stars and galactic empires await you! How much is science and how much is science fiction? Is the Force strong in you? Join us for a week of Star Wars! (This class has an extra $10 materials fee.)
